UK Labour would seek security and defense treaty with Germany LONDON — A U.K. Labour government would seek a bilateral security and defense treaty with Germany in its first six months of winning power. Labour’s Shadow Defense Secretary John Healey said Tuesday the agreement would be modeled on the historic Lancaster House treaties reached by Britain and France in 2010. It would be part of a wider British push to reconnect with European allies if Labour Leader Keir Starmer wins the next U.K. general election.Healey will present the proposal alongside Nils Schmid, the parliamentary group spokesperson for foreign affairs for Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SDP), which leads Germany’s three-party coalition government, at an event in London on Tuesday.“Allies are our strategic strength,” Healey said. “We want a Lancaster House style UK-German defence and security agreement struck within the first six months of a Labour Government. This will grow UK jobs, strengthen NATO and keep Britain safe,” he added. The Labour Party’s policy platfo...

Relentless Walpole girls lacrosse team defeats Concord-Carlisle, 12-8

Relentless Walpole girls lacrosse team defeats Concord-Carlisle, 12-8 CONCORD — There was a word Walpole girls lacrosse coach Mike Tosone used to describe one of his players after a 12-8 victory over Concord-Carlisle on Monday.Relentless.And while, yes, that applied to sophomore Caitlyn Naughton, it could have been directed at any one of his Timberwolves. With the Division 1 state tournament looming and looking as competitive as ever, Tosone could not pick an adjective more fitting as Walpole finds its way.Against C-C, Naughton led the way with five goals. Fellow sophomore Sophia Fruci had three goals, and senior Bridget Welch and freshman Ava McLean scored twice apiece. With the win, Walpole improves to 14-2, while C-C falls to 8-6.Yes, Walpole may be young, but not totally inexperienced, as Tosone was quick to mention the bevy of two- and three-sport athletes on his team.“They don’t get rattled,” Tosone said. “I think a lot of that is innate. So many of our girls play three sports. They’re in a competitive environment yea...

Mets split series against Nationals after poor start from David Peterson WASHINGTON — The Mets’ pitching situation has become untenable.Of all the problems facing the Mets right now, the starting pitching problem is the most pressing. The repeated failure of the club’s starters to go seven innings or even six creates a domino effect that’s tough to overcome on a nightly basis, no matter how good the bullpen may be.And to be clear, the bullpen is pretty good right now. The best in the National League coming into Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals. But another dismal start by David Peterson (1-6) in the fourth and final game of the series at Nationals Park illustrated the issue. The Nats tagged Peterson for six earned over five innings and the Mets lost 10-3 to split the series. It was clear that Peterson was done after the fourth inning, maybe even the third. But the bullpen had to pick up 11 innings over the previous two games and the Mets had little choice but to let Peterson get to five innings. An overworked bul...

While assessor’s valuation of Arlington International Racecourse is being challenged, the Bears and area school districts tangle over ideas for lower amount The Chicago Bears and a trio of school districts whose financial resources stand to be impacted by the football team’s proposed redevelopment of Arlington International Racecourse in Arlington Heights are deadlocked over how much the Bears should pay in property taxes for the site.Team President and CEO Kevin Warren said in a May 4 letter to three school district superintendents that their proposal of a $95 million valuation for the property is a “non-starter” and “not viable.” The valuation would result in the Bears paying $7.9 million in yearly property taxes.“This is an excessive sum for property that will sit idle and will have no commercial use for at least the next two years,” Warren wrote. The Bears countered by proposing annual tax payments of $4.3 million, and called for returning to the negotiating table.Warren’s May 4 letter, obtained by Pioneer Press, addressed collectively to the superintendents of Palatine Community Consol...

Yankees Notebook: What went into decision to open with Jimmy Cordero TORONTO — The Yankees diverged from their normal pitching plans Monday, asking Jimmy Cordero to open against the Blue Jays before Jhony Brito took over.Cordero, a righty, hasn’t started a game since 2013 when he was a member of the Blue Jays’ rookie ball affiliate. But the plan was for him to throw no more than an inning or two against his old team.Brito was in line to start Monday’s series opener, but the rookie has struggled against righties, as they have a .292/.347/.631 slash line and five home runs against him this season. The Blue Jays have three dangerous right-handers at the top of their lineup — George Springer, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — and Cordero has held that side of the plate to a .171/.256/.257 slash line.“Just want to take a little bit off Brito,” Aaron Boone said before the game. “And obviously, it’s a really good lineup over there, and three pretty impressive right-handers to start out.”...

Robbins: Congress targets bank’s bid to obscure Nazi links Until lately, America’s longstanding tradition of bipartisan Congressional investigations had been robust, recognized even by partisans as an essential feature of Congress performing the job Americans need it to do. The tradition has taken  hits recently, falling victim to extreme, vitriol-infused polarization and the erosion of what had been assumed to be sturdy civic norms. But it got a boost last month, when a subpoena issued jointly by Senate Budget Committee Chairman Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Ranking Member Charles Grassley (R-IA) forced into daylight a transparent attempt by banking giant Credit Suisse to abruptly terminate an investigation that was in the process of reinforcing its reputation for scandal. The investigation had already uncovered new evidence that Credit Suisse had actively, ardently serviced high-ranking Nazi leaders while Hitler was in power, facilitated the Nazis’ retention of assets plundered from their victims and helped Nazis escape prosecution after...
