A Pennsylvania driver who was being handcuffed stomped on his pickup truck’s accelerator and ran over his passenger and the officer who was trying to detain him, police said. The passenger, who was trying to get out of the truck, was killed. The driver fled in the truck and was found eight hours later hiding in an attic, police said. He is being held without bail. The incident began around 1 a.m. Sunday when Calvin Wilson — police chief of the borough of Honey Brook — was on routine patrol in Chester County about 30 miles west of Philadelphia. A pickup truck at a gas station just outside Honey Brook caught his attention; he ran its license plate and saw that the owner had warrants for his arrest. Wilson followed the truck as it left the gas station and pulled it over about a minute later. It turned out the driver was not the truck’s owner — but he also was the subject of an arrest warrant for a probation violation, which Wilson discovered after checking hi...SFFILM Fest 2023: Stephen Curry doc and 9 other films you shouldn’t miss

Will Steph show?In the run-up to the 2023 SFFILM Festival’s kick-off event April 13 at Oakland’s Grand Lake Theatre, this has become the most bandied-about question.Obviously, Stephen Curry has received an invitation, since he is the focal point of the opening-night film, award-winning Oakland documentary-maker Peter Nicks’ exceptional “Stephen Curry: Underrated.”But even if the Golden State Warriors star is a no-show, the East Bay filmmaking community will be in the spotlight, with Nicks and Oakland native Ryan Coogler, director of “Fruitvale Station” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” planning to attend, along with other notables.Although “Stephen Curry: Underrated” received its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Nicks (known for his trio of Oakland-based films, “The Waiting Room,” “The Force,” and “Homeroom”), said there is something special about seeing his latest effort launch SFFILM Fest in in Oakland.“I’m just excited to watch the film with our community...Southbound 880 shut down by CHP as part of investigation into 5-year-old's death

In 2021, a Texas intelligence command center disseminated a bulletin warning its law enforcement partners about activists interested in sabotaging fossil fuel infrastructure. The report detailed no specific threat, but instead linked to an interview with Andreas Malm, a Swedish professor of human ecology, on a New Yorker podcast in which he advocated for the destroying or “neutralizing” new fossil fuel projects like pipelines using nonviolent methods. Now, Malm’s work is once again drawing the attention of a fusion center. “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” a new movie dramatizing Malm’s 2021 nonfiction book of the same name, sympathetically depicts the infrastructure sabotage by environmentalists. The film’s fictional protagonist, Theo, contracts leukemia after growing up in a Long Beach neighborhood with heavy pollution. She joins several others to strap a homemade bomb to an oil pipeline in West Texas. In a report disseminated last week, another intelligence command center — this time in...Márquez won’t race in Americas MotoGP, cites hand injury

I will continue working and rehabilitating as I have been doing so far to be able to get back on the bike as soon as possible.”Race officials penalized Márquez for “irresponsible riding” that led to the crash in Portugal. BOISE, Idaho (AP) — It all started with a call about a Jeep suspected in a shooting, an Idaho detective told jurors Tuesday in the triple murder trial of a woman accused in the death of her two children and a romantic rival. But investigators soon found evidence that raised suspicions of a bigger crime, Rexburg Detective Ray Hermosillo said, including lying witnesses; a stash of weapons, duct tape and rope; and evidence that two children were missing. The search eventually led them to a local man’s yard and two gruesome burial sites containing the kids’ remains. Lori Vallow Daybell and her fifth husband, Chad Daybell, are both charged with multiple counts of conspiracy, murder and grand theft in connection with the deaths of Vallow Daybell’s two youngest children: 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and big sister Tylee Ryan, who was last seen shortly before her 17th birthday in 2019. The children were buried on Chad Daybell’s eastern Idaho property. Prosecutors also cha...Column: PGA and LIV produced a Masters just like any other

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — The Masters had eight major champions finish among the top 10 and ties, and where they made a living became a mere footnote when Jon Rahm slipped into the green jacket. For the most part, it was a Masters just like any other. That includes the final hour. As much drama as Augusta National can create, this was the fourth straight year the winner had at least a four-shot lead with four holes to play. This wasn’t the first major with both PGA Tour and LIV Golf players. What caused so much anticipation was the Masters being the first major since the two tours began waging an expensive battle in federal court. And so the Masters became the first look at how the two sides would get along (fine), and how LIV Golf players would fare over 72 holes against a full field (even better).Brooks Koepka led from the second hole Friday morning until the sixth hole Sunday afternoon until he suffered through an inglorious 22-hole stretch without a birdie, and Rahm shot 69 to win b...Snow slide closes Berthoud Pass
