OTTAWA — The Bank of Canada’s public consultations on the creation of a digital Canadian dollar reveal most respondents are opposed to it.  The central bank released its findings today, which show that more than 80 per cent of respondents strongly oppose the Bank of Canada researching and building the capability to issue a digital dollar.  The vast majority of respondents also say they do not trust the Bank of Canada to issue a secure digital currency.Among the top concerns of respondents was privacy, with the questionnaire revealing low levels of trust in institutions to protect their personal data. The Bank of Canada notes the findings do not necessarily reflect the views of the overall public because participants self-selected to respond to the questionnaire. While the public consultations aimed to gauge interest in a digital currency, the central bank says the decision to create a digital dollar is for Parliament to make.  This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov....

Jewish groups sue University of California over ‘unchecked’ antisemitism

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:53:09 GMT

(The Hill) -- A pair of Jewish organizations filed suit against the University of California (UC) system, the University of California, Berkeley, and school administrators on Tuesday over allegations of a "longstanding, unchecked spread of antisemitism" at the school. The 37-page suit, filed Tuesday in the Northern District of California by the Louis D. Brandeis Center and the Jewish Americans For Fairness In Education (JAFE), claims antisemitism has been allowed to "take root and grow" at the UC Berkeley School of Law (Berkeley Law) for over a year. The suit argues intervention is needed, especially in the wake of the militant group Hamas' surprise incursion against Israel last month that killed over 1,200 people and sparked an ongoing conflict in Gaza. In the weeks that followed Hamas's Oct. 7 attack, a surge in antisemitic incidents was reported in several parts of the U.S. and in Europe. The suit accuses nearly two dozen student organizations at UC Berkeley Law of practicing poli...

Gophers football bowl projections are familiar — very familiar

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:53:09 GMT

The Gophers’ bowl projections have coalesced around one main destination.Minnesota will learn its official location and opponent on Sunday afternoon, but seven of 10 national forecasts observed by the Pioneer Press this week have the U playing in the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit on Dec. 26.The Gophers got into the 82-team bowl field this season because of a lack of six-win teams, and the schedule needed to be rounded out with one program with a 5-7 record. The U got in because it had the highest Academic Progress Rate (APR) among 5-7 teams.Gophers are familiar with both the low-level Quick Lane Bowl and the circumstances in which they got into the field. They played in Detroit on two previous occasions, as a 5-7 team with strong academics in 2015 and at 6-6 in 2018. The U won both times: 21-14 over Central Michigan in 2015 and a 34-10 rout of Georgia Tech in 2018.Six of the seven Quick Lane Bowl projections for the Gophers have a range of Mid-American Conference foes: No...

A six-planet solar system in perfect synchrony has been found in the Milky Way

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:53:09 GMT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Astronomers have discovered a rare in-sync solar system with six planets moving like a grand cosmic orchestra, untouched by outside forces since their birth billions of years ago.The find, announced Wednesday, can help explain how solar systems across the Milky Way galaxy came to be. This one is 100 light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. A light-year is 5.8 trillion miles.A pair of planet-hunting satellites — NASA’s Tess and the European Space Agency’s Cheops — teamed up for the observations.None of the planets in perfect synchrony are within the star’s so-called habitable zone, which means little if any likelihood of life, at least as we know it.“Here we have a golden target” for comparison, said Adrien Leleu of the University of Geneva, who was part of an international team that published the results in the journal Nature. This star, known as HD 110067, may have even more planets. The six found so far are roughly two to three times the size of ...
