OAKLAND — Before Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland A’s inducted five franchise icons into the team’s hall of fame.Jason Giambi, the 2000 AL MVP who hit 241 home runs in eight seasons in Oakland, was among those honored. The 5-foot-8 Nick Allen would not have been the obvious choice among current A’s players to replicate one of Giambi’s moonshots. But after hitting just one home run in his first 59 games, the shortstop tripled his season total, blasting two over the left field wall before a handful of A’s legends.“I woke up on the right side of the bed,” Allen said jokingly when asked about what caused his big day at the plate. “But no, I felt like I was seeing the ball well today. ”Allen’s surprising home runs in the second and fifth innings keyed Oakland’s 8-6 victory over the Giants (61-51) before an announced crowd of 27,381 at the Coliseum, as the two teams finished the Bay Bridge Series at two wins a...

Twins sweep Diamondbacks on Wallner’s walk-off homer in 9th inning

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Matt Wallner hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to give the Minnesota Twins a rain-delayed 5-3 victory and a three-game sweep of the skidding Arizona Diamondbacks.Christian Walker had put the Diamondbacks ahead 3-2 with a solo home run in the top of the ninth.Max Kepler led off the bottom half by hitting his third homer in three games. Jorge Polanco walked and Wallner sent a soaring drive off the facing of the right-center scoreboard off new Arizona closer Paul Sewald (3-2), who was acquired from Seattle in a trade Monday.“With us struggling, and finally getting that chance to try and get off this losing streak and get called upon to do what I’m supposed to do and then fail miserably, it’s disappointing,” Sewald said.Wallner’s home run was no surprise to Kepler, however.“He’s legit,” Kepler said of his rookie teammate. “He’s a beast. A big ceiling for him.”Minnesota handed the Diamondbacks their sixth straight defeat and opened a 4 ...

Glover wins Wyndham Championship. Thomas season ends by inches.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Lucas Glover did more than extend his PGA Tour season Sunday. He won the Wyndham Championship with a 2-under 68 that sends him into the FedEx Cup playoffs with more big opportunities in front of him.Glover managed a two-hour rain delay and took advantage of a faltering Russell Henley to win for the first time in more than two years and earn an unlikely spot in the lucrative postseason.Justin Thomas ended his season with a shot he won’t soon forget. Needing a birdie on the 18th hole, his pitch from 100 feet short of the hole smacked off the base of the pin and settled inches away as Thomas fell to the ground in disbelief. Now he has to wait three weeks to see if his worst season — this is the first time Thomas has failed to make the playoffs — will cost him a pick for the U.S. Ryder Cup team.Glover now has five PGA Tour wins separated by 18 years, and there might not have been another except for deciding to switch to a long putter, a move inspired by Adam...

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Few even mentioned his name, and the new federal indictment he faces was completely ignored, as Republican candidates for president tried in Iowa Sunday to present themselves as Donald Trump alternatives.Over the course of two hours, seven GOP hopefuls took their turn on stage in front of about 800 party activists in the leadoff caucus state, all invited to speak at Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson’s fundraising barbecue at a Cedar Rapids racetrack. But in their pitches to challenge Trump for the 2024 nomination, it was as if his indictment Tuesday on federal charges accusing him of working to overturn the 2020 election results had never happened, even from the candidate who has suggested the former president quit the race. Instead, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who has been a vocal Trump critic, touched only on the related Republican outrage with the Department of Justice, which many conservative activists allege has been politically biased in its inve...
