His smell: Johnny Depp signs $20 million deal to hawk Dior fragrance

Dior will continue to sell men on the idea that they can smell like Johnny Depp, inking a massive, $20 million deal with the actor, a year after his reputation was put on trial in a lurid defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who had accused him of being an abusive husband. The French luxury house may feel that its support of Depp has been vindicated by the actor’s victory in his defamation lawsuit. So, possibly for that reason, Dior is rewarding Depp with a three-year fragrance deal “at upwards of $20 million,” Variety reported. This deal marks the highest ever pact for a men’s fragrance, Variety added. It eclipses Robert Pattinson’s $12 million deal to serve as a spokesperson for Dior Homme and is nearly three times the $7 million that Brad Pitt received to promote Chanel No. 5.Since 2015, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star has served as the face of Dior Sauvage, with an ad campaign that “leaned into his image as a wild rocker,” Varie...

With a new skating surface in place and other renovations complete, the Paradise Skate Roller Rink will open on Friday, more than four months after storms caused extensive damage. The popular roller rink was forced to close last New Year’s Eve when torrential rains hit the area and water rose some six inches inside the rink.Staff later added some 200 sandbags around the building and was able to seal the doors to prevent more water from seeping into the rink.Over the past few months, manager Bob Bruce, staff, volunteers and others worked to remove the damaged carpet and wooden floor.“Our clubs – Artistic, Derby and Speed clubs – provided labor to get the stuff up and out,” he said.Afterward, the cement had to be ground down to make it smooth, followed by the application of an epoxy coating designed for roller skating, Bruce said.“The entire place has been wiped down and sanitized to remove all the dirt and grime that was collected during the closure,” he added. “There have been a lot ...

By Valerie Gonzalez, Elliot Spagat and Giovanna Dell’Orto | Associated PressEL PASO, Texas — The border between the U.S. and Mexico was relatively calm Friday, offering few signs of the chaos that had been feared following a rush by worried migrants to enter the U.S. before the end of pandemic-related immigration restrictions.Less than 24 hours after the rules known as Title 42 were lifted, migrants and government officials were still assessing the effect of the change and the new regulations adopted by President Joe Biden’s administration to stabilize the region.“We did not see any substantial increase in immigration this morning,” said Blas Nunez-Neto of the Department of Homeland Security. He said the agency did not have specific numbers because it was early in the day.Migrants along the border continued to wade into the Rio Grande to take their chances getting into the U.S. while defying officials shouting for them to turn back. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Gimena Páez could barely pay her bills. Then inflation in Argentina started rising even faster. On Friday, Argentina’s state-run INDEC statistics agency said that the inflation in food prices over the 12 months ending in April was 115%. That has been topped only by Lebanon, with a whopping 352%.Life was never easy for the neighbors of Nueva Pompeya, a lower-middle-class neighborhood where Páez lives at the southern end of Argentina’s capital. These days, for many in Argentina, paying bills and getting to the end of the month have taken a backseat to a more basic problem: getting enough to eat.Argentina’s annual inflation rate has already ...

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho jury on Friday convicted Lori Vallow Daybell in the murders of her two youngest children and a romantic rival, a verdict that marks the end of a three-year investigation that included bizarre claims of zombie children, apocalyptic prophesies and illicit affairs.Vallow Daybell, who wore a simple black dress, showed no expression as the verdict was read. Some in the courtroom gallery wiped tears from their eyes.Prosecutors in the case described Vallow Daybell as a power-hungry manipulator who would kill her two youngest children for money, while the defense team said she was normally protective mother who fell under the romantic sway of a wannabe cult leader.Jurors heard both stories Thursday during final arguments in the seven-week long trial, and deliberated for about four hours before breaking for the evening. They resumed deliberations Friday morning and reached a verdict, which was announced shortly after noon.Vallow Daybell was convicted of conspirin...
